Wall Street Valet, now in Pakistan

I marvel at the entrepreneurial skills of everyday Pakistanis. I had an early morning meeting at I I Chundrigar Road. Being the “Wall Street of Pakistan”, there is no parking available on that long stretch of bank-lined tarmac. A group of enterprising men, however, are operating a valet service unlike any other.

They are not commissioned by any particular company, so its not valet in the traditional sense. These are just a bunch of guys who take the keys to your car and drive it to a parking spot 2 kilometers away. Because they have been doing this without fail for so long, people like me trust these nameless men with our cars. When you want your car back, one of these guys will be ready with another person’s car that needs to be dropped to the parking, and you can tag along with him to get to yours. The system is brilliant.

All this for a paltry 30 rupees! A conservative guess at the numbers of cars using this service per day would land somewhere around 200. These guys should be richer than the people whose cars they park in no time!

Makes me proud to be a Pakistani.
