Bye Bye Baby Blue

I’ve got to sell my beautiful blue baby Jag. I am not happy about it, it’s my pride and joy. I haven’t had a car I’ve enjoyed and been truly happy to drive since my first Fiesta. My baby blue Jaguar has ivory leather seats and a walnut dash. Do you know that it may not be a Mercedes or a BMW but it is a classic stylish car.

I’ve got to sell it as my Old Man has been out of contract since September. I told him not to terminate when they’d offered an extension, but he did because things were not going smoothly for him. He contracts you see as an Interim Director/Senior Manager. Goes into a place and restructures, hires, fires, sets targets and implements efficiency processes and procedures enabling the Section, Group or Company to operate in a more cost effective manner. He’s just finished a 2 year contract but they wanted to keep him on a rolling month by month arrangement.

I can see why he left, the company he was working in kept promising permanent roles in this country and the States but when it came down to it, all the people who made the offers worked at such a senior level, they’d forgotten how to do mundane things like arrange an appointment. So after 2 years he had to finish otherwise the Revenue would be labelling him as a permanent employee. However I had said at the time it’s not a great time to be out of contract, but it made no difference. ‘The Agents’ had told him it was a good time to find work and they were the experts after all.

It wasn’t and he’s been out of work since September and I’m having to sell my car. Once this money has gone then I don’t know what will happen as we’ve got no reserves left. Trouble is people that look at his CV think he’s senior and therefore won’t consider him for a more middle of the company role, but jobs in his line are very few and far between. Once we heard a saying that you should prepare to be out of work, per month, for every £10,000 you earn. If this is correct then it’s going to be a very hard 2 years.

The Old Man hasn’t signed on, it’s not worth it, won’t cover our mortgage although it would take care of the council tax. The clerks don’t have any idea about the job my husband does and therefore asks him to go on Project Manager or programmer jobs paying less than a 1/3 than he is used to.

I haven’t got a ‘proper’’ paid’ job because I gave up my career to look after his children. I am supposed to be setting a new business consultancy up but unfortunately we need money to move it forward. I wouldn’t mind going back to 9-5 in a regular office but OH wants me to become the Alan Sugar of the Energy Industry.

So my baby blue jag is going to be sold, you’ve got to be practical. Sorry to sound spoilt or petulant but I love my Jag.

New Jaguar XK exclusive

New Jaguar XK exclusive

Jaguar’s next-generation XK sports car will have a near-300bhp V6 diesel-powered variant in its line-up when it goes on sale around 2013.

The British manufacturer’s first ever diesel-powered sports car will get a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 to take on models like the BMW 635d, which has become the best-selling car in its class in the UK and Europe.

See More Pic Jaguar XK

In the new, lightweight aluminium-alloy XK, the punchy 3.0 turbodiesel promises a practical mix of performance and economy, with 0-60mph in under five seconds and a combined average of 30mpg within its grasp.

With V8 levels of torque on offer, the XK D could even become the ‘sleeper’ in the range, boasting giant-killing in-gear acceleration for strong point-to-point driving pleasure.

Significantly, as the market has shifted towards diesel sports cars, it should also help to lift the XK’s production average back up to 10,000 to 12,000 units per year by exposing the XK to a large new market segment.

To refresh the Jaguar sports car concept, the XK will feature all-new sheetmetal and a new grille design that will ditch today’s ‘Spitfire wing’ oval shape, which dates back to the E-type of the 1960s.

This traditional shape will be dropped for two reasons. Firstly, it can’t easily be expanded to make a bolder front-end statement. “It just looks wrong when it’s stretched,” said one insider. Secondly, the oval shape has proved to be less of a success overseas, where research shows it can be confused with other brands’ grilles.

Instead, Jaguar is deriving a new shape from the oblong design launched on the XF, but with its own unique characteristics. “The studio has explored dozens of variations. It’s just a matter of choosing the right one,” said another insider.

The XK’s exterior sheetmetal is also expected to move Jaguar design further forward again, just as today’s Ian Callum-designed model did when it was launched in 2006. Although the final styling still has to be chosen, the favoured sketches are understood to feature crisper metalwork and more developed body surfacing.

As with today’s car, both hard-top coupĂ© and open-top convertible body styles will be available. The cabrio will retain a soft-top roof for packaging, styling and marketing reasons.

As the interior quality of competitors continues to increase, so the XK will respond with the highest-quality cabin ever seen in a Jaguar sports car. The design inspiration comes from the new XJ, with that car’s clever blend of hand-stitched leather and hi-tech materials taken to a new level. Expect the TFT-screen instrument panel technology developed for the XJ to be employed in the XK, along with the XJ’s electrical harness and system.

Under the skin the new XK is less ambitious, featuring a carried-over rivet-bonded platform of alloy extrusions borrowed from today’s car; Autocar understands that this key decision has been firmed up in recent months. That will keep the XK’s 2+2 cabin and relatively compact dimensions intact.

Much of the new car’s undercarriage is expected to be carried over, such as the front and rear axles and adaptive suspension, albeit with tuning improvements. The same goes for the powertrains, which will major on V8 petrol engines — both supercharged and normally aspirated — alongside the V6 diesel.

Three killed in early morning accident on the Parkway West in Pittsburgh

Two young men and a young woman were killed in an accident last night on the Parkway West in Pittsburgh.  A car carrying five people drove down towards the Fort Pitt Tunnel from Greentree Hill and lost control. The car jumped a guide rail and went over a hill, rolling over several times as it descended the hill.  The three occupants of the backseat of the car were killed and the driver and front-seat passenger survived the accident and were hospitalized.

As is often the case when young drivers are involved, speed must considered as a possible or probable factor in the cause of this tragic accident. A thorough police investigation will provide a statement as to the cause of  this accident.  Pittsburgh area fatal accident attorney.

Empty Tire

I knew my tire was low on air yesterday, but it slipped my mind this morning as I started my daily trek. While on the highway, a lady kept honking her horn at me and screaming out her window. Naturally, I got pissed and was about to flick her off until something told me to hold back on my road rage. I thought for a second and remembered my low-on-air tire!

I got off on the nearest exit to find that the noise I kept hearing was my rim grinding against the asphalt while driving. Wonderful!

I reached for my wallet to find it empty. “Oh yea, I used all my coins to park in South Beach this weekend and gave my remaining $20 bill to someone last night who in a fit of anger threw it out the window. I have no way to pay for air!”

A little bit about me: I like to drive fast. Anything below 80 makes me anxious and I get itchy, but I had no choice. I threw on my hazards and drove in the right lane of the highway (torturous for me) all the way back home (I was a good 7 exits away).

I got home, found 50 cents and grabbed another $20 bill only to get to the gas station and find out that air is 75 cents. Oh the disappointment. I couldn’t get change for my $20 unless I made a cash purchase, so I bought a little, red Bic lighter – just in case you wanted the details of my purchase… all I needly were a measly 25 cents! :(

I’m so happy I wore sneakers and not heels today. What a pain to be kneeled on the disgustingly filthy floor of a gas station in heels and a skirt while getting my hands all greasy with the air hose. My sneakers and jeans offered me so much comfort that I don’t care how dirty they got.

All in all, my tire has air, but I didn’t have time to fill the others so my car feels a little lopsided. My poor baby.

A Luxurious Car For You

Top end car is a term that is employed generally, but does anyone truly know what it means? When it comes to automobiles, luxury is in the eye of the onlooker. What a car dealer’s ad touts as luxury might be different to what a car rental agency categorizes as a luxury auto, and both may fight with your private perception of what a luxury automobile is.

In economics, a luxury item is one that is in higher demand among folk with higher incomes. A luxury automobile is a symbol of status, and status symbol, and standing varies depending upon the socioeconomic or demographic group to which is applies.

A high end auto may simply mean a high-priced auto. A luxurious car may not always be considered a luxury automobile. For instance, due to its high price, a Hummer is often considered a luxury car, even though though the first Hummers are heavy duty military trucks without emphasis on comfort.

A luxury car might also simply be an auto manufactured by a manufacture famous for making luxury autos, whether or not the categorical automobile is cheaper than its usual models. For example, all models of Mercedes and Jaguars are thought to fall into this category, even the least pricey versions.

Most folk would accept that an costing more than $100,000 would be considered a luxury vehicle. Virtually all cars made by Rolls Royce and Bentley, for instance, fall into that price range. Exclusivity is on of the few agreed characteristics of a luxury vehicle.

Typically, luxury cars reinforce comfort and operation. Leather, adjustable, heated seats are an example of luxury accessories. High-performance vehicles like sports autos, an instance Corvettes and Snakes , are status vehicles, but not everyone would call them luxury automobiles. An vehicle might be lush by virtue of its amenities and its comfort level without being pricey, though to most people a luxury means something they really can’t afford.

Because I smell like gasoline.

I looked totally hot this morning. I wore a dress, groomed my hair, and sprayed on my favorite perfume. I left the house feeling confident and ready for the day. The sunshine engulfed the sky, making 18 degrees feel more like 40. I drove to the gas station to fill up my tank, and that’s when things sort of got smelly.

Per usual, I set the latch on the pump to auto so I could putz around in my purse and get things organized while my tank fills. Well this time, when the pump was supposed to stop automatically once the tank was full, it just didn’t. I thought it might have been because the latch was still flipped so I flipped it back and pulled the nozzle out.

It was like a geyser of fuel.  All over my car. All over the ground. All over my pretty little shoes and bare legs. I smell like fuel, not Wonderful by American Girl, and I am not happy about this.

I think tomorrow I will just wear baggy jeans and a t-shirt to work.

Dollars and Sense

“So…we’re not eating out again until after, approximately, the birth of our third child.”

- C.

Indy, though a blessed luxury after four years without a car, does come with a certain amount of wear and tear.  She’s 12 years old and I’m increasingly of the opinion her previous owner didn’t love her as I do.

We came back from Christmas to find her battery (the one she came with: a secondhand, refurbished one at that!) had died.  J.’s parents had generously bought us a new one for a Christmas present but when they were bringing her back to life, the mechanic said we should keep an eye on our timing belt because it was obviously old and cracked.  Also a mount and filter needed to be replaced (thanks, Indy’s negligent previous owner).

As far as I can tell, you should be dead. But I will charge you an arm, leg, and that third child you mentioned to fix it.

So, when I took her in to get her oil changed yesterday, I batted my eyelashes and asked the mechanics if they could pretty please also check the belts for me because I was ever so worried about them (no charge!).  Unfortunately I went to pick her up I got some scary news.  Both the timing and driving belts seemed to be in immediate danger of molecular disintegration.  And even a non-tech type like me knows that when those go, the entire car goes.  They recommended immediate replacement but as it was already late afternoon and as it was going to be ”at least a half day job,” they said the earliest they would be able to do it was today.

This morning I drove J. to school and then to the shop to be there when they opened at 8am thinking that, as they said it would be a half day thing and they are first come first serve, everything would be done by noon and I could go into work after lunch.  I dropped Indy off and then walked the half mile home.

I’d just got to the door when I realized I’d turned all of my keys over to the mechanics and was locked out, and our landlord would be no help because J. and I had just changed the bolt lock.  Sigh.  I trudged back to the shop, sheepishly asked for my keys and headed back home grumbling.  My grumbling increased exponentially forty minutes later when the shop called to explain that the water pump attached to the belt was leaking everywhere and needed to be fixed as well.  Don’t worry, I didn’t let them charge me double labor.

I achieved this crazed expression sometime around 1pm. It was hyperactively downhill from there.

The rest of the day I spent checking my phone every ten minutes to see if the shop had called.  I did five loads of laundry, scrubbed the kitchen counters and floor, and cleaned our room.   I rang Susie every two hours to update her and explain that I was still fully planning on coming into work, until about 3 when I became resigned to my fate.  I watched two full movies on AMC while I folded clothes, as well as part of the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.  I’d gone verifiably stir crazy by 11.  When I began looking around the flat and thinking of decorating ideas I realized I’d reach Stepford Level of Battiness.  They called at 4:50 to say they had finished.

Praise be to Jupiter, Odin, and Quetzalcoatl that we have a Pell Grant to cover tuition and a fat tax return on its way (hurrah for being young, poor, at university, newly married, and living on a tiny income!), as well the fact that we like to save money for just such circumstances.  It’s a steep bill buts it’s cheaper than a new car!  I’m glad we’ve got the means and common sense to take care of ourselves, I just wish it wasn’t so bloody expensive sometimes.

The downside: $800.00 and an even larger pile of work on my desk tomorrow.

The upside: three day work week and clean laundry.
