Get an Auto Loan After Bankruptcy

Going through a bankruptcy can be a harrowing experience but it doesn’t have to gain control of your entire financial life. Most people that are coming right off a bankruptcy immediately think that they cannot get a loan, and most people think that as long as the bankruptcy mark is on their credit report there is no way that they will every be able to qualify for any sort of loan or line of credit. This kind of thinking is not correct though because you can get a bankruptcy loan even if you filed for chapter 7 or chapter 13 as long as you can take the right steps to repair your credit and apply to the right lenders.

Many people are particularly worried about getting an auto loan after bankruptcy as it seems that the current level of thinking is that auto loan lenders have stricter policies when it comes to approving a borrower that is coming off a bankruptcy. It will be harder to get an auto loan after bankruptcy, but it will by no means be impossible, and the sooner you are willing to put the time in to make the appropriate improvements to your credit the faster you will be able to get your auto loan.

Auto loans are similar to other kinds of consumer loans in that they are based off of your credit and income. Provided you have your income in order, the main thing you thus have to worry about while getting approved for a car loan is your credit-which will be in bad shape if you are coming off a bankruptcy. To increase your chances at approval the best things you can do to improve your credit involve continuing to pay for whatever credit accounts that are leftover after your bankruptcy, and possibly taking out additional small loans and lines of credit that can serve as your primary ways of rebuilding your credit after bankruptcy. Once you begin to make these sorts of payments on time each month your credit should begin to climb and you should therefore be eligible to apply to even some of the more reputable lenders. Once you have your credit score back up to where it should be then the actual bankruptcy mark should not play much of a role in

Branching Out Over Morning

Whenever I go out shooting I always start out with a couple of “wasted” shots just to get my eyes adjusted to seeing the world around me through the camera. This practice helps me “see” shots before I even trigger the shutter. This was one of those shots. It was early in the morning. The sun was just coming up and it had rained the night before. Rain was still on the windshield of my car. Not expecting to save this shot – it turned out to be one of those lovely accidents. I really like the impressionistic feel of the image. Very little in focus because of the water on the windshield.

PRO-MA PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS

PRO-MA PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS Pro-Ma Petrol Treatment, Diesel Treatment and MBL8 Oil Additive Pro-Ma Performance Products have been incorporated in my regular day-to-day service procedure for over six years.

I first came to know about Pro-Ma Performance Products from a friend of mine who used to rebuild Briggs & Stratton ride-on mower engines. Occasionally a motor would slow up in revs as it would start to heat up. He would stop and change the engine oil, as well as adding the Pro-Ma MBL8 Oil Additive. Straight away the engine would come up to speed and I attribute this to the lubricating properties of the Pro-Ma MBL8.

I have been using the Pro-Ma MBL8 for 6 years in my wife’s car (1990 Camry Wagon). With the Pro-Ma MBL8 added over a 6 month period, this engine does not need oil top ups between changes. Pro-Ma PT5 is also used in petrol in the Camry, and my wife tells me that her fuel consumption has dropped by about 20.00 dollars per week.

I have a new Mahindra Pick-Up Dual Cab that has only 20.000 km on the clock. I have been using the Pro-Ma DT5 Diesel Conditioner in my fuel and I also have noticed a drop in fuel consumption. Easier starting, and smoother power on acceleration. Also, when idling the sterning wheel use to vibrate but now with the addition of Pro-Ma DT5 the vibration has just about vanished. As time progresses I will be trying all of the Pro-Ma Performances Products, and the Pro-Ma Petrol and Diesel Treatments, and MBL8 will continue be a on-going part of my maintenance program for both my vehicle and my wife’s wagon.

This product really works and in the long run saves on mechanical bills and parts repair.

Security Tag, BBQ Sauce, and an Accident

I just got back from a weekend in Independence, Missouri.  I was there with my dad and uncle attending the conference where they presented their research findings that I was helping them with.  Overall the weekend was fun, I met a lot of very nice people, and learned some interesting things.  Plus it was cool to hang out with my dad and uncle for a few days.

We headed straight for the Kansas City airport to pick up my uncle and that’s when I noticed something on my shirt.  See, last week I went clothes shopping.  I know, I know very unusual for me but I’ve been feeling a sort of physical funk I guess.  Anyway, I ended up buying a couple of shirts.  One is white and one is black but otherwise totally identical and both are nicer, more dressy type shirts.  I knew I was going to need to dress up at least two of the days so I brought both along, having worn the white shirt once and never having worn the black one.

Blah, blah, ok.  I get in the back seat where my clothes are hanging and notice that the store security tag is still on my black shirt.  Lovely.  Of course I try ripping it off but if you were capable of doing that the security tag would be pointless.  All I have to do is keep my white shirt clean and just hope it won’t look too bad after a couple of days of wearing it.  Naturally about an hour after I put on the shirt I spilt barbeque sauce right down the front.  Honestly, I rarely ever spill my food on my clothes.  I leave that to Pammy Girl.  But of course I was wearing the white one with no other shirt to change into. Grrr.  This kind of irony happens to me so much it’s almost laughable.  Almost.  Ok, well it is. When I got back to my room I was able to use the handsoap to wash my shirt so it looked as good as new.  No harm, no foul.

But the real event happened Friday afternoon back in Arkansas.  My brother was involved in a car accident while driving my car.  He’s fine, just a little sore, and everyone else involved was fine.  Some car, for reasons unknown to my brother, drove off into the median which caused other drivers to slam on their brakes and swerve into the other lane.  When all was said and done, my brother was at the tail end of a four car pile up.  And here’s the kicker, he was driving my car because last week someone backed into his while he was parked at Office Depot and then they drove away.  So I had told him that he could use mine to transport his equipment to Little Rock for his concert that was on Friday night.

I am so grateful that he’s ok, that everyone in the accident is ok, and that though things could have been so much worse, they weren’t.  As it happens, just this week I paid off my car and had received my title.  I don’t know if my car is fixable or not.  I don’t know if my insurance will say it’s totaled or not.  I don’t know if I’ll end up having to buy another car, take out another loan to pay for that car, or even if I’ll ever get a job to pay back on the loan I may have to take out.  But I do know that my car is easily twice as big as his.  And I do know that the frame in the front of my car is a lot stronger than on his.  And while I don’t know exactly what might have happend had he been driving his car, I do know it could have ended very badly.  And knowing this makes me so glad he was in mine.  And besides, at least I can say I was a car owner for a week.

The 1965 Chrysler 300L

The 1965 Chrysler 300L has been the last of the letter series for more than 30 years. The series started in 1955 (the letter I was skipped) and during this time less than 17,000 were produced. From 1955 through 1957 the Chrysler was the fastest American car, because Chrysler had become the first American manufacturer to develop 300hp in a production car.

The body styles available were either hardtop or convertible, except 1955,1956, and 1963 when no convertible was available.

The original 300’s are by some people considered to be the first muscle cars, winning a total of 37 NASCAR and AAA stock car events in 1955. But they were not only fast but also large and luxurious. Qualities muscle cars did not typically match.

Of the Chrysler 300L 2,845 cars were produced, 2,405  were 2-door hardtops, and 440 2-door convertibles.

The specifications were as follows: V-8, 413cid, 4bbl carb, 360bhp at 4,800rpm, 470ft/lbs at 3,200rpm, either standard 3-speed auto or optional 4-speed manual.

REQUIRED VIEWING "BULLITT" | THE GRANDDADDY OF CAR CHASE SCENES

*

*

To say that Bullitt had a car case scene is like saying Steve McQueen was a good actor.  Both arguably are gross understatements.  The history-making car chase from Bullitt is still considered the gold standard for which all such scenes today are held to.  McQueen hadn’t planned on a driving double, he insisted on doing all the Mustang stunts himself–  but in an early scene that’s in the film, he missed a turn pretty hard and nearly lost it– the exec’s immediately pulled the plug on McQueen’s plans and tapped someone with a little more practical experience.   As fate would have it, driving duties were handed over to none other than McQueen’s good buddy (and auto and motorcycle racing legend) Bud Ekins.  The story behind the filming of this ground-breaking scene is (I hate to say it) more fascinating to me than the whole of the film itself.  Read on for great behind the scenes details on how history was made in pulling-off this incredible piece of work– the likes of which had never been attempted before.

THE GREATEST CHASE OF ALL–

An inside look at how they filmed BULLITT, the granddaddy of car pursuit movies.

BY: Susan Encinas (Muscle Car Review, March, 1987)

Where were you in 1968? You might have opened up the movie section of the newspaper and read a review about the newly released movie BULLITT. One such review, by the National Observer, said, ” Whatever you have heard about the auto chase scene in BULLITT is probably true…a terrifying, deafening shocker.” Life magazine wrote, “… a crime flick with a taste of genius…an action sequence that must be compared to the best in film history.”

With reviews like that, and sharing double billing with the hit BONNIE AND CLYDE, BULLITT devastated audiences with incredible scenes of leaping, screaming automobiles that seemed to fly off the screen. Among all of Hollywood’s road movies, BULLITT unquestionably made film history with its original car chase sequences. There may have been chase scenes before, but nothing before or since has equalled the intensity and impact of BULLITT. The scenes, which were novelty then but classic now, were brilliantly executed. Over the years, fans have asked questions about the two cars used in the movie, a 1968 Dodge Charger and a 1968 Mustang GT. Of all the musclecars offered in the late sixties, why were these two cars chosen, and how were they modified to survive the torturous driving?

*

*

It’s been 19 years since BULLITT was filmed, however the magic of this special movie has not diminished. We questioned some of the crew who participated in the filming, and asked them how the chase was coordinated and shot, who was involved in the chase scenes and what happened during the filming. Steve McQueen and director Peter Yates brought in some of the best names in the business in preparation for the filming of BULLITT’s chase scenes, and we were able to track some of them down. We interviewed Carey Loftin, stunt coordinator for BULLITT and occasional driver of the BULLITT Mustang; Bud Ekins, the main stunt driver of the Mustang, aside from McQueen; and Loren Janes, who had doubled for McQueen for nearly 20 years and stunted for McQueen during the airport sequence at the end of the film. We also interviewed Max Balchowsky, the man responsible for maintaining the Mustang GT and the Charger throughout the filming. Finally, we spoke with Ron Riner, who acted as transportation coordinator for Warner Brothers on the BULLITT set.

We set out to learn what the recipe is for such a successful chase sequence. What we found out was that there is none; it was pretty much a hit and miss thing and, as Ron Riner put it, “other people have tried to put the same combination together to get the same results and haven’t really done it. Before we’d shoot a scene, everyone, the location people, the police department, the stuntmen, the director and Steve, would get into discussions. We realized we didn’t know what to do because no one had ever done this before.” What hadn’t been done before was a chase scene, done “at speed”(up to 110 miles per hour) through the city streets and not on a movie studio back lot. Bud Elkins said, “I think it was the first time they did a complete car chase at normal camera speed. What you saw is what really happened. It was real!”

*

*

McQueen was determined to have “the best car chase ever done,” recalls Carey Loftin. “I told Steve I knew a lot about camera angles and speeds to make it look fast. You can undercrank the camera so you can control everything in the scene. Then when it’s run, it’ll look like high speed and the car will appear to be handling real well.” McQueen refused to hear of it, and advised Loftin that money was no object. “Fine,” Loftin replied. “Until you run out of money, you’ve got to stop me!”

In an interview with Motor Trend magazine, Steve McQueen related his desire to bring a high speed chase to the screen. “I always felt a motor racing sequence in the street, a chase in the street, could be very exciting because you have the reality objects to work with, like bouncing off a parked car. An audience digs sitting there watching somebody do something that I’m sure almost all of them would like to do.”

BULLITT was also the first picture done with live sound (some of which was added later as needed). For example, additional sound was needed because on occasion a tire squeal was not picked up by the microphones. Bud Elkins remembers blowing the rear end of the Mustang at Willow Springs winding the gears for engine noise to be added to the soundtrack.

To prepare himself, his crew and the cars for the movie sequence, McQueen and company went to the Cotati race course near San Francisco. “Steve handled the Mustang real well,” recalled Riner. “He flowed well with the car.” Also on hand was the late Bill Hickman, the fantastic stunt driver who would handle the menacing Dodge Charger in BULLITT. “Bill came in with the Charger,” Riner said. “And he flipped it around and he slid in backwards. He was excellent.”

*

*

The BULLITT chase scenes were shot around Easter of 1968. When city officials were first approached about shooting in the streets of San Francisco, they balked at the proposed high speeds and the idea of filming part of the chase on the Golden Gate Bridge. Eventually, it was agreed to keep the chase within only a few city blocks. McQueen was the prime motivator behind the chase sequence, and then director Peter Yates and Carey Loftin worked out logistics behind the scenes.

McQueen hadn’t planned on having a stunt driver. Relates Carey Loftin:”The first thing Steve said was, he was going to do his own driving. Well, I wasn’t going to argue, so I said, ‘okay, fine’.” McQueen’s stint as a stunt driver didn’t last long, however. “He overshot a turn, smoked the tires and everything. It’s in the film,” said Bud Elkins. “When Steve did that, it wasn’t on purpose. He goofed up, and they said, ‘that’s it, get him out of the car’. The next morning they were spraying my hair down and cutting it. Consequently, it was Elkins who drove the car down hilly Chestnut Avenue. Also, according to the book entitled The Films of Steve McQueen by Casey St. Charnaz, the other reason for McQueen’s removal from the Mustang was that McQueen’s wife at the time found out that he wanted to do all his own driving and apparently SHE had some input into the decision not to have him do all the driving.

As director Peter Yates prepared to begin filming the chase scenes, there were four drivers, McQueen, Bud Ekins, Bill Hickman, and in a few scenes, Carey Loftin. Loren Janes tells up, “Carey Loftin was easily the best car man in the business. He brought in Bill Hickman to play a part and drive the other car.” Loftin recalls: “I asked (the studio) what kind of guy were they looking for? And they described Bill Hickman, who was working on the LOVE BUG at the same time. Well, I said, he’s sitting right here. They really described Bill Hickman.”

The screenplay of the movie was written by Alan Trustman, based on the novel, Mute Witness by Robert L. Pike. But the story, according to Ron Riner was not the key element to the success of the movie. Riner says, “I think basically the story was long and confusing, so when the chase came along it was so good it gave more substance to the movie. I think it really saved the film, because most people don’t remember the story, they remember the chase. You couldn’t really remember the complete story, if somebody asked you, unless you read the script, because the script was much better and made more sense.”

As filming of the chase progressed, Loftin wanted to see the daily work (rushes). He was told that Mr. McQueen wouldn’t like that. Loftin insisted, and threatened to quit unless he could view the daily work. “It worked out really good,” Loftin said with a smile. “Because as we watched the rushes, you could hear a pin drop. I was sitting 3 or 4 rows in front of him (McQueen) and when it was over, he came down, stuck out his hand, and said, ‘Mr. Loftin, when you need me for a closeup you WILL let me know, won’t you?”

*

*

As for the cars, Max Balchowsky tells us, “I suggested they get a 390 GT. I had suggested using a Mustang, and a Dodge Charger, or else there would be too may Fords in the picture. I thought we’d mix up the cars.” The two 1968, four-speed Mustang GT fastbacks were purchased primarily because, promotionally, they were the best deal at the time. As far as Bud Ekins can recall, he feels the reason they used the Mustang was because “they wanted it to look like a cop car. This was his personal car and he wasn’t a rich guy, he didn’t have a real nice car. And it was Steve’s idea to put the big dent in the fender, to show that it got banged up and he didn’t have enough money or the time to fix it.”

Warner Brothers purchased two four-speed Dodge Chargers… “at a Chrysler dealership in Glendale California,” recalls Ron Riner. He also said the Dodge Chargers had to be purchased without promotional consideration, but after the success of the movie and the increase in Charger sales, Chrysler was more than willing to be generous with their vehicles to Warner Brothers for future projects. Mr. Riner posed an interesting premise: “did you realize that there wouldn’t be an 01 car (the General Lee in Dukes of Hazzard) if we hadn’t done BULLITT and Dodge hadn’t sold so many Chargers?”

Before the filming could be done, the Charger and the Mustang required preparation. One of the best wrenchmen in the movie business, Max Balchowsky, recalls the Mustang in particular needed considerable modifications so it could hold up during the relentless beatings it would take during the filming. “Carey said they were gonna do a lot of jumping with it, and he said it had to be strong. So I was a little hesitant. I didn’t know if they wanted to go over 50 foot cliffs. I had no idea what they wanted to do until I got there.” To beef up the Mustang, Balchowsky started with the suspension, reinforcing the shock towers, adding crossmembers and reinforcements, exchanging the springs for replacements with higher deflection rates and replacing the stock shocks with Konis. All suspension parts were magnafluxed and replaced where nescessary. The engine also came in for some modifications, including milling the heads, adding an aftermarket high performance ignition system and reworking the the carburetor and adding headers.

*

*

On the Mustang, Mr. Balchowsky recalls, “everybody suggested I put a Holley on the Mustang, it was better than the Ford carburetor. I’ve always had good luck with Fords, and didn’t want to spend money if i didn’t have to putting a Holley on. It ran good, needed just a few little adjustments. I changed the distributor and all, but basically never had the engine apart on the Ford.” Ron Riner remembers “the stock Mustang had undercarriage modifications, not only for the movie, but for Steve McQueen. Steve liked the sound of the car and he wanted mags. We hopped it up because Steve wanted the car hopped up. He was still a kid.”

Balchowsky remembers “I hardly had to anything to the Dodge’s engine, but what I was worried about was the strength of the front end.” To shore up the front, Balchowsky revised the torsion bars, beefed up the control arms and added heavy duty shocks. As with the Mustang, all parts were ‘fluxed. For the rear end, Balchowsky told us, “I got some special rear springs, what you call a high spring rate, a flat without any arch in it, and using that spring the car would stay low. It’s similar to the same springs they use in police cars, which makes a good combination. When the police specify a package, they have more spring here, a little bigger brake there, a little bit more happening in the shocks, and it makes a good car. But the director of BULLITT wanted a brand new car instead of an ex-police car, so I got the springs from a friend at Chrysler. We had to weld reinforcements under the arms and stuff on the Dodge. We did lose a lot of hubcaps on the Charger. We’d put the hubcaps back on, but I suppose it probably would have been better if we had lest them off.”

“I’ll tell you this,” said Max Balchowsky, “I was really impressed with the Mustang after I got done with it. I didn’t think it’d make that much difference beefing it up. Later, we took both cars out and went playing around with them over by Griffith Park (near Los Angeles). The Dodge, which was practically stock, just left the Mustang like you wouldn’t believe.” Ron Riner has similar recollections. “The Charger ran rings around the Mustang. We trimmed the tires down (on the Charger), we practically made them down to bicycle tires to try and handicap Hickman, and Bill just run them.” Carey Loftin also recalls,” we test ran the car at Griffith Park near the Observatory, up a long hill. and if you can run a car real hard up and down that hill it’s working pretty good.”

*

*

“The day before the chase scenes were to be filmed, we went up to Santa Rosa and rented the track,”said Balchowsky. “Steve wanted to test the car. A production manager would have cut your throat if you wanted to do something like that. An accident would have ruined the cars, and we were slated for Monday morning, 6:00 a.m. to start shooting. Hickman and Steve were buzzing around the tracks, and it was pretty even. McQueen and Hickman were both tickled with the cars. So, fortunately everything worked out.”

Generally everyone seemed to agree that the chase went smoothly, although filming went a “little bit slow,” Bud Ekins recalls. “Yates and Steve were particular. You would rehearse it once- it’s got to be choreographed- then you would rehearse it again, and if it looked good, they shot it. You rehearsed at about 1/4 speed or 1/2 speed, then you went in to film it at full speed.”

For the in-car scenes, two camers were mounted in the cars and painted black. The jarring landings after the cars were airborne are the result of the cameras being tightly secured and not cushion mounted. The effect was more than McQueen had bargained for. “It’s a funny thing,” he told Motor Trend. “That was what shocked me and I didn’t expect it, because we were using a 185 frame which is a very small frame. We weren’t even using a big super Panavision or anything. Even on the 185, they (the audience) jumped out of their seats. I didn’t do the shots going down the hill, they pulled me out of the car. Bud Ekins did that.”

In the Motor Trend interview, McQueen recalled there were some close calls and incidents that looked good on film but weren’t exactly planned to happen, some of which occured in the memorable downhill sequences. “Remember that banging going down? That was about 100 mph. I was bangin’ into Bill. My car was disintegrating. Like, the door handles came off, both the shocks in the front broke, the steering armature on the right front side broke and my slack was about a foot and a half. The Mustang was really just starting to fall apart.”

There was an incident which alerted the crew to take extra precautions while doing the car chase. “A child,” Riner told us, “maybe five years old, came out of a building and stepped out on to the street. We stopped and brought in more stunt people and more cars and I think the theory was if anybody had a problem, they’d make a barricade out of the vehicles. The problem never came up again, or I never saw a problem.” Incredible, considering there were only two policemen on the scene as compared to the 40 policemen utilized for the chase in MAD MAD WORLD. Carey Loftin says, “the extras were a big help. If there was an alley or any place that wasn’t covered, they’d come and tell me. They were real good.”

*

*

Because some of the stunts were so well orchestrated, they did not look like stunts at all. Recalls Carey Loftin: “Several years after BULLITT, an extra (on another set) was talking about BULLITT, and he was saying how it was amazing how accidents get into films and he said that the best one he ever saw was the scene where Bud Elkins did the spill off the motorcycle. I let him go ahead and tell it. He said ‘the cops were watching the action and weren’t watching the traffic and this motorcycle guy slipped through, and got into the scene and ended up in the picture.’ I said, ‘you really think that’s what happened?’ The extra said, ‘ I know, I saw it, I was there.’ And I said that’s the way it’s supposed to look, because it wasn’t supposed to look like a stunt.” Ron Riner comments on the scene, “I didn’t know about the stunt and I was supposed to get the information!”

There were THREE cars racing wildly through the streets of San Francisco, making car chase history, although only two are seen in the movie. The third vehicle, a camera car, was driven by Pat Houstis, while cinematographer Bill Fraker manned the camera. Said Ron Riner, “Pat Houstis was excellent and he was in his prime at the time.” Carey Loftin has nothing but praise for Mr. Houstis and an amusing recollection. “Pat Houstis, a terrific driver, had just built the camera car, and he showed it to me. He did a real good job on it. It was a Corvette chassis, and he had stripped all the stuff off and built a good suspension, good engine and everything. But it looked like hell.”

His confidence in Mr. Houstis is evident as he relates another incident. ” We had one scene where Pat was following Steve on Guadalupe Canyon Highway, a beautiful road. We wanted some shots of the Mustang really burning the corners. We did it several times. The operator of the first camera said, ‘Steve’s not getting his foot into it, he’s a better driver than that.’ I went to Steve and said, ‘you know Pat Houstis is a terrific driver.’ Steve said ‘yeah, yeah he is.’ I said, ‘he knows responsibility too. You know what that man would do if I was driving the car in front of him and anything would happen? He’d run into a parked car or hit a tree just to miss me. Now think what he’d do for the star? Now get into that car and get your foot into it!’ We got the shot on the next take.”

One particular scene that impressed Max Balchowsky was the gunman in the Dodge firing a shotgun blast at the pursuing Mustang that shatters the right front of the windshield. “The guy who did special effects devised the chain balls that bust the Mustang windshield. I thought it was terrific when the guy whips the shotgun out and the way the special effects fellow devised how those pebbles cracked the windshield and it made it so realistic like he really shot the windshield. It sure made Ford glass look good.”

The gentleman in the car, playing Bill Hickman’s partner in crime, was actor Paul Genge. According to Ron Riner, Mr. Genge, who played a very realistic tough guy, “seemed like he had hardly ever seen a gun before. They scared the hell out of him. In the scenes in the Charger with Hickman, he was scared to death. After two or three time we almost had to bodily put tranqiulizers in him, and put him in the car. Mr. Hickman was one of the coolest drivers I’ve ever met.” Max Balchowsky tells us, “there was a scene where the Charger passed a truck, and they only wanted to leave so much room on one side, and Hickman did it perfectly when he came by and took the bumper off the truck. That was a super shot. Throughout the chase sequences, some of them were accidents but, they looked fantastic- Hickman was terrific.”

*

*

To achieve the stunning conclusion to the chase in which the Charger loses control, leaps an Armco fence and plows into a gasoline station, Loftin rigged up a tow and release set up hidden from the camera’s view between the Mustang and the Charger. Dressed to double McQueen, Loftin laterally towed the Charger at 90 mph with its two dummy passengers and at the right moment released the Charger into the nitro-loaded gas station. Unfortunately, the Charger missed the station, but the charges were set off and the explosion, thanks to some deft film editing, had the desired effect and was added to the movie.

There seemed to be a general atmosphere of professionalism and mutual admiration on the set. Loren Janes tells us, ” I loved to see a lot of the little things in Steve’s films. The best teeny things came up in it, the best stuff was Steve’s ideas. Like when they’re (Hickman and Genge) going up the hill and they’re after Steve and all of a sudden he disappears and they can’t see him and the guy (Hickman) looks up and Steve appears in his rear view mirror. In other words, he changed it, now he’s chasing them. Well that was a great turn of events. It was fantastic. It was WILD reckless driving, but it was planned and coordinated. There was class to the BULLITT chase, there was a reason for it, and that’s one of the key things people forget: the greatest stunt in the world is worthless if there isn’t a reason or story to it and BULLITT had a story point all the way through and a reason.

The enduring scenes of the forboding Charger and the powerful Mustang have etched themselves in film making history. The sequences were the brain child of Steve McQueen; He knew what he wanted and how he wanted it to appear on film. No one has duplicated the electricity or the savage ferocity that manifested itself in BULLITT chase scenes, and it’s doubtful any one ever will.

Drive Into A Giant Washing Machine! Place Review

Diddleshot’s “Drive Into A Giant Washing Machine!”, it’s just another one of them games where you go in and theres some cars and you just get in and fly yourself down a hole. Thats basically all you do. It’s a well made game, but it’s a bit boring. I particularly didn’t spend as much time driving down the hole as I did just killing people for fun on the surface. When you drive down it’s just a small hole that spins, it’s actually rather annoying as it’s very laggy and your camera breaks easy. People on the surface can control wether the Machine spins or not and when you do eventually fall out at the bottom, you’re just in a small box which is EXTREMELY hard to escape from. There is no reset tool, and if you attempt suicide by blowing yourself up, the rockets just fly off the walls and are never seen again.

I give this game a 4/10, it’s well built, but very boring and simple.

It was a monsoon summer

Needless to say, it isn’t always a beautiful day in the neighborhood.  (I love Mr. Rogers, but I’ll try to stop with the references now.)  If you were anywhere in the Northeastern United States this past summer, you know that the rain rain rain came down down down.  It truly was miserable.  I had resolved to bike to work as often as possible during the summer months, to save money on gas.  And to save my carbon footprint.  I’m what you might call an environmentalist, but I do drive a 16 mile per gallon Chevy Blazer.  You take what you can get, and it certainly gets me places.  When it is sunny, it’s a nice 10 minute ride to work.  But after one bike ride home during a thunderstorm/torrential downpour, I decided to drive whenever the forecast called for rain.  Which it did, almost every day.  And almost every day, it would start around 4:30 pm (when I would maybe start thinking about leaving work).  Not conducive to commuting by bike.

The truly ironic thing about all this rain is that the research I was helping with the summer depended on base flow in the streams.  Many of the streams in this area are heavily impacted by stormwater, so whenever it rains the water  level goes way up.  I experienced this first hand when I arrived on my first day of work, and had to jump into the Casperkill Creek to replace a water quality monitoring device.  The stream is usually at about mid-thigh height, but with all the rain we got in June, the water was nearly at my waist.  I do wear chest waders to stay dry, but managed to get a whole bunch of water inside them while reaching for the device at the bottom of the stream.  I was very, very wet, and not very happy about it.  I’m a small person (5′2″); meanwhile, my friend Cat is over six feet tall, and was much more successful in reaching the device at the bottom.  (She asked me to do it instead of her, because she forgot her socks that day, and it’s pretty gross to wear the chest waders without socks.  It’s also pretty gross to be covered in combined sewer overflow water and E. coli.)

The other research project I’m assisting with is, as I mentioned before, dependent on dry weather conditions.  Those basically never came this summer, and we had to make do with not quite ideal circumstances.  My own research this past year was on water quality in rain gardens, and depends on rain.  I’m trying to continue to take samples for this project now that the school year has started and I have the chance.  But since September arrived, we’ve had maybe one day of rain.  The weather isn’t very cooperative for research projects these days.  And when I say I need it to rain, people haven’t been very sympathetic.

In our house, we have a screened-in sun porch downstairs; my bedroom is adjacent to a similar room directly above it.  The floor in the upstairs sun porch looked like there had been water damage.  And we soon discovered why.  The roof on that section of the house is flat, and whenever it rained, there was quite a bit of water that would drip through the roof, puddle on the floor of the upstairs sun porch, and drip down to the downstairs sun porch.  We had a major leak problem.  My allergies very sensitive, particularly to mold, so living next to all this wet wood was difficult.  I’ve been wearing my glasses more these days than ever before, because my eyes have been so red and puffy.  We told our landlord about the problem, and when she came back down from the roof she reported that the gutters had been clogged and that there had been a small lake on that flat part of the ceiling.  I wasn’t surprised.  Luckily she unclogged the gutters, and the problem improved quite a bit.  But we still have wet wood and leaks when there’s a heavy rain.  She once came by the house and told us that if we get a leak, we should get a bucket.  So that’s been more or less our attitude towards the whole matter.

Speaking of not-so-beautiful days in the neighborhood, though, I feel the need to also mention here the car alarm that went off for three days straight last week.  The car was parked on the street one or two houses down from ours.  Not ok.

There are some pictures I just took today and now they are up on the internet.

The Conspiracy

This is the guy who was selling the car today and I realized that he did know much about the car. He had been doing car dealing for living. I guess he can trade for some fools who does not know much about cars. However, he is not a good recommendation to ask related questions from this car that I was trying to buy. He seems like a nice person but he definitely did not do much homework to sell this car. After a long time discussion about what I thought to the condition of this civic, he marked down price to $6100. Apparently, he does not know much about this car and blindly give false information about the fuel economy. He has no idea how this car runs and goes. Anyway, I just found out this car is from a car lot and had been just purchased a few days ago from a dealer auction. He owner did not have the title on hand because he just purchased from the auction. It needed to wait for a few weeks until they actually got the title.

The rim is almost perfect except the edge. Its a noticeable red spot on the edge.

The cap for the tire is missing one, I was asking where were the cap and he told me it was gone and it only took $2 to get them replaced.

I think the light on the right has been switched or replace from another civic si and the bumper as well. I totally believed that this car has been repaired before and I could tell the color did not completely matched. The guy insist that had a clean title but he was just saying and promised to me. So do I just have to believe him based on what he said. My previous 98 honda civic dx got an accidence before the dealer fixed it and changed the side fender and both of the front head lights. Look at this car, both head lights are not the same from as original. This is visible by just seeing the color on the lights. I instantly notified that the left light remained as the original and the right one has been changed.

This is not scratch. This is so apparent. I believe it is a collision caused by other vehicles. It could be a motorcycle????
The tire cap is missing again. There are some minor rust on the break edge which is normal to all the cars. I again confirm this car has a fair condition.
As you can see, at least the right side fender has been switch and there are minor spots on the hood. no visible but I can tell the car has been driven hard before. I could see the natural damage caused by the wind and small rocks. Under the hood, everything is fine except the car has not been filled with windshield fluid and and done much maintenance.???
This vin number is SHHEP33562U303734

There are some more:

Rust on the break.. see. it proof that this car is not garge keep.

Testing:
Since this is my first time testing the civic si. I really had no experience from the performance. At least I can tell a few things. The car is kinda heavy (feeling) because the steering wheel is kinda hard to turn. The acceleration is awesome when you press the gas all the way hard and the short shifting is well too. Again, there is no trouble to get on a highway and fly. AC, remote key lock, sunroof, radio, window lock, window controlling, and cruise controlling are good and I have no complaint at all. However, the only thing I havent tested is the head lights and the tail lights. I dont know how it works out since its day time.

S-Video cable: Future video transmission

A separate video or S-Video cable is also known as Y / C cable. S-video cable to transmit analog video signals suitable for long distances. Technically, there are two parts to carry the video signal. But the whole phenomenon of the composite image signal different brands of such low quality and high-quality formats.

S-video cable transfer video signals in 480i to 576i moderate resolution. The only difference between the signals S-Video and Composite, S-video with no audio output through the same cable. A typical female S-video mini DIN has four pins. Others have an S-Video 7-pin connector also known as blocking Dubs. Cable S-Video to RCA jacks form is very useful to make it compatible with older televisions. Input composite video and Y / C input is compatible.

S-Video cable provides better performance if they are engraved in silver. Unlike other ports, gold plating over nickel body connection is not necessary for good reception. S-video cable products in the network can be used to process NTSC, PAL and SECAM coded messages.

When used for high-definition video, which are both 4:3 and 16:9 formats compatible with S-video. Widescreen signal via S-video is also available in PAL format.

S-VHS JVC video cassette system also applies the technology S-video to achieve their full potential. But that dominate the weak response of the consumer sector, not the gadget. But after a few years, S-video format has a DVD player, video game console and accessories Satellite receivers. S-Video format has the technology of the graphics card to a certain extent appropriate. However, technology has replaced HDMI S-Video later. S-video cable is always better and less expensive alternative to the composite video input with good quality and level of detail to consider. Component video, and later introduced the need for an S-video products with high quality, low cost cable.

Review your vehicle coverage regularly to be assured that you receive the best insurance merit for your money. You’ll see that it acquits shopping around. Premiums for equal policies may widely differ among various companies, in Florida. The reasons for such a variety can be very complex, but it retrenches to claims experience of a company with policyholders in group of your coverage. For example, if a major number of people in your coverage group files will claim pending a given year, your rates will probably be raised. Lower general premiums and better discounts might be available at other companies, when this happens. You’ll see it’s pretty simple to move your auto insurance to a different company, when you settle to do so.

Before you cancel the old insurance coverage, you should always have a new policy instead. The gap in protection will asset serious risk, in case you’ve had a claim or an accident. It can also cause your auto insurance rate to strikingly rise. Luckily, there is almost no jeopardy of this to happen. All drivers, living in Florida are obliged to carry a lesser level of insurance. The majority of companies also requires to present new coverage confirmation before canceling an old policy.

Actually, all you have to do to cancel your vehicle policy is to notify your insurance company in written form, defining the date you want to cancel the policy. In several states, the new agent must inform the previous one of the policy shift.

Day Trips with Your Parrot

Location: Somewhere in Nevada
Road trip pal: Congo Grey “Cressi”

Taking your parrot on day trips is SO important for mental stimulation AND bonding. A good rule of thumb to remember is being the “familiar in a world of unfamiliars” which basically translates to… even if your bird isn’t your BFF, when you take it somewhere where everything else around you is a stranger, you become the ONE thing that is familiar and safe to your bird. This is something you can use to your advantage when taking your bird to different places to get it accustomed to traveling, meeting new people and seeing new things… basically desensitizing your bird. These are things your bird would NORMALLY experience in the wild, and so it’s important to bring that aspect of life into your bird’s life with you.

How bored would you be if you never went to new places, tried new things or saw something new every once in a while? Think about how your bird feels! Then think about how much fun it would be to do all that… but how nerve wracking it would be to do by YOURSELF. Especially when you’re younger and don’t know much about the outside world because you haven’t had as much experience as your parents…

But if THEY go along with you… then you feel a sense of comfort because you can go back to them and you know they are there with you.

If you REALLY think about it, raising a bird is just like raising a kid! You have to give the bird the same things so that it doesn’t develop problems later because later on in its life, it’s going to be HARDER to get your bird to accept new things. Just like with people. You want to work within their natural curiosity at a young age but just because your bird is older, doesn’t mean you can’t do all this too. It’s NEVER too late to start being a good “parront”!

Dave and I are constantly taking day trips and including our birds in on it. For example, just today he had to make a 2 hour drive (each way) to Lakeland, Florida and so he took our grey, Cressi, along for company! She loves it because she gets to be with him, bonding, and talking up a storm! And she gets the new exciting experience too.

So try to include your parrot on your next day trip, wherever it might be!

Distracted from Blogging Here

I’ve been so busy that I could only do blogging on Outside In and not here this month.  I have had personal issues with getting my car repaired (I just got my car back tonight).  First, there was the brakes not working properly and then the gas tank was leaking.  I had to go to two different places to get each problem fixed.  Also, I had my car key remote fixed as well.  That thing stopped working back in November 2005.  Now, I can use my remote again.

I  am also focusing more on being a fiction writer and putting a few short stories together.  On top of that, I had to go find some frames for my artwork because I am showing my artwork of the AANE Art Exhibit on Saturday, October 3, at the John Hancock Convention Center on 180 Berkeley Street in Boston from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The art show is in conjunction with AANE’s annual Fall conference.

I am also starting new exercise classes at work with two new instructors this month and checking up with my doctor about starting a new diet because I can’t seem to hone my muscles and reduce the fat in my abdomen.  My arms and legs look great though.  Go figure!

Hopefully, my blogging here at Uncommon Bostonian will pick up in the next few weeks.

I'm just tired

Ugh it just seems I can never just have a day off. Yesterday I worked on the car so that when my mom shows up it looks like a decent car and she’ll be willing to spend money on to get me. I have to clean up my place. I didn’t do laundry because I was just flat out drained. Then everywhere I look people are just trying to guilt me into doing things. I’m just flat out tired of it. I got remeasured this morning and everything went up including my fat. So yes I’m bigger, but now there is more fat. Yep feeling like a fat ass right now. What’s worse is some people don’t get that I just don’t like seeing pictures of myself. Especially with my shirt off. The only one who has even mentioned a difference in my physique is my boss. Oh joy one person noticed. Yeah I’m suppose to feel that much better about it. I mean the guy measured me the first time. Of course he notices a difference. I’ll start thinking I’m actually changing when I get looks off the street or customers point it out. Oh well squiby time I guess. Today’s video is the 1st opening for the anime Bobobo-bo-bobobo. As you can tell by the name it’s a really random anime. anyway enjoy the opening. It’s just as crazy as the whole anime series. The song is called Wild Challenger fyi. Today’s tip is all is fair in love and war, so tell that cop you’re in love. My sister apparently can’t wait for me to tell that to a cop. My b-day is now 11 days away. Yeah so not looking forward to it.

The Tyre

“No, No, No. That is just what I needed a flat and in the middle of a lonely road miles from the next garage” and with her last remark Judy gave her flat tyre a heavy kick. Then something strange happened. The tyre was surrounded by a white mist which slowly took the shape of an apparition. To be exact a small figure was standing next to the tyre dressed in blue overalls, just like the miniature version of a mechanic.

“At your service Madam” the figure said.

“Who are you and what are you doing here. “

“Madam it seems you have problem with our tyre.”

“What do you mean our tyre. The tyre belongs to the car and it has a puncture, no air, flat, so where do you come from and why have you taken possession of the tyre. It belongs to me and not to us.”

“Please let me explain, I am tyre genie, put into the tyre by wise old genie when it was made.”

“You mean like Aladdin and the lamp. You must be joking. You don’t even look like a genie.”

“No joke madam; only joke is that Aladdin and lamp are old fashioned, not very modern. Today all lamps are electric, not oil. You mean I don’t look like Aladdin. Let us be serious. If I was dressed in the old fashioned clothes that Aladdin wore, you would not believe that I was a tyre genie.”

“No, I suppose I would, but then I don’t really believe in tyre genies or do I have three wishes?”

“Of course you have three wishes. Just try me.”

“OK, I wish that the tyre had air.”

“No problem madam.”

and the tyre really did get some air and was no longer flat – for a few minutes. Then the air started escaping again through a hole.”

“Satisfied madam?”

“I would be if the air stayed in the tyre, but it is escaping again.”

“Of course it is. You asked for air in tyre, but did not say to repair hole.”

“Are you trying to be funny. OK, I wish that the hole would be repaired.”

It seemed to Judy that nothing had happened.

“Of course something happened madam. Tyre is repaired.”

“So where is the air?”

“Madam said nothing about air, just hole repaired. You have one wish left.”

“I don’t think I will bother. You seem to interpret my wishes as you want to.”

“Wishes are always suited to wish instruction manual which says only grant what is asked; all other remarks made after the wish do not count.”

“OK, genie, so how do I get my tyre repaired and make my way home.”

“No problem, madam, I have magic tyre.”

“What is that?”

“Successor to magic carpet. Magic carpets old fashioned and no longer available. We now only have magic tyres.”

“OK, so get your magic tyre and bring me home.”

“No problem madam. Genie has problem.” And then he started crying.

“So don’t cry genie, you are staining your nice clean overall with grease marks.”

“I must be mad” thought Judy, “talking to a genie as if he was real.”

“Why are you crying?” she asked.

“Flat tyre has been genie’s home since car belonged to you. We have spent many hours and travelled many miles together. Now genie has no tyre any more to live in. If you go home on magic tyre car will be left alone with flat tyre and I am homeless.”

and he started crying again.

“You mean you have lived in that tyre since I bought the car. I never noticed you were there.”

“Genies should not be seen or heard, only in emergency.”

“OK genie, tell you what. You get the magic tyre and we both go with the magic tyre to the next garage. You drop me off just before we get to the garage and then go back to my car with the magic tyre. I will tell the mechanic what has happened and he will drive me to my car and change the tyre. When I have the new tyre on the car you can move into that one and live there.”

“Oh madam, many thanks. You mean I get a complete new tyre.”

“Looks like it genie.”

“Madam you still have one wish, if I may say so.”

“OK genie, but I am not so good at wishes. Do you have a suggestion?”

“Oh yes madam. Please wish that new tyre has built in shower. I always feel so dirty when we get home from a drive out.”

Do you believe in genies? Judy didn’t but now she does. She loved flying on the magic tyre and after the new tyre had been fitted on the car she made her last wish and now she has the happiest tyre genie you can imagine. She even washes his overalls when they are dirty. Of course, she also wished for an extra set for genie to wear after he had taken a shower in his new tyre.

Woman Robbed at gunpoint at South Park Mall

From the Charlotte Observer of 8-22-09

Written by Steve Lyttle

An alert witness has provided Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police with some help after two men robbed a woman at gunpoint at South Park Mall.

The witness used her cell phone to take a photo as two men drove away from the robbery scene in the mall parking lot.

Police say a woman was leaving the mall and walking to her car when she was approached by two men who forced the victim to get on the ground. The men took the woman’s wallet, police say, and then got into their get-away vehicle.

The car, a 1999 two-door red Honda Civic, was stolen earlier in the day in North Charlotte, police told WCNC, the Observer’s news partner. The car’s N.C. license tag is VTF-8693.

The woman was not physically harmed. Police say anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

I’ve been working on this for a while. There’s a contest on Harvey James’ blog, so I figured I’d have a go at it. The contest involves creating a comic using at least two existing characters on his blog. All the characters have quirky designs, so I decided to contrast that by doing a simple, casual, one page comic. I was going to ink this but I really got into the pencils. I didn’t wanna loose any details by trying to ink of tight pencils. I’d be nice to do a full comic in just pencils, but I not sure how well it would reproduce if it was printed. Here’s the simpled colored version and the original pencils.

Nikola's Newest Incarnation

I titled this post Nikola’s Newest Incarnation to tip my hat toward old Nikola Tesla, who changed all our lives, and to pull out a terrible pun. See, this is about the upstart automobile manufacturer Tesla Motors (hence the Nikola). And since they build cars… Incarnation = in”car”nation. Get it? (I told you it was terrible.)

Anyway, I got in a discussion about cars and MPGs with a few family members and, amid talk of dismal hybrids and costly conversions, I suddenly remembered a bright spot in the world of automotive technology: Tesla Motors. Or rather, I remembered rumors of their exciting (but expensive) Roadster that had raised eyebrows a few months ago. To refresh our memories, the Roadster is a two-seater sports car with acceleration to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 125 mph (electronically limited) and maximum 248 horsepower at 6,000 to 8,000 rpm (it redlines at 14,000 rpm). It has a range of over 200 miles on a single charge and can re-charge in three and a half hours with the high power connector (also from Tesla). It’s just over nine and a half feet long and six feet wide, has independent front and rear suspension, a clean and uncluttered interior, all the amenities one expects in a car (air-conditioning, power windows and doors, spiffy stereo system, cruise control, etc.), and – most importantly for a sports car – is a convertible. For an electric car, it’s pretty impressive.

But when I visited Tesla’s homepage to check the specs I discovered a more interesting feature: three new models. Okay, one’s not exactly “new” since deliveries are already being made but it was new to me. So, first up, the Roadster Sport, a beefier (288 horsepower), faster (0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds) and more performance-minded car with, unfortunately, a price tag to match ($121,000). The other two are sedans, the Model S and Model S Signature (which is presumably a slightly beefier version of the former, as with the Roadster and Roadster Sport), scheduled for delivery next year.

So let’s run the new specs. The Model S can go 160 miles on a charge or, if you want to upgrade, 230 miles … or if you want to upgrade more, 300 miles. It can charge to 80% capacity in 45 minutes, accomodate 5 adults and two children, and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds with a maximum speed of 120 mph (also electronically limited). It has a small rear hatchback for storage, as well as a full trunk under the hood (Volkswagen, eat your heart out). The rear seats fold flat to increase storage area if needed and it can purportedly haul a 50″ flatscreen TV or a full set of drums. The base model comes with all the usual amenities (like the Roadster) as well as a 17″ touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity. I’m no techie but that sounds pretty cool. It costs about $4 to fully charge the battery pack, which has an estimated life span of five to seven years (although it noted ten years was not uncommon with proper maintanence). Best of all, it starts under $50,000.

Although all of Tesla’s products are out of reach for many Americans at this point, I think the progress they’ve made is huge. And if these are any indication, the electric car may not be just an idealistic dream for much longer.

Nick of Time

There are some pictures which happens once in a lifetime. While browsing through my collections, I picked two of such. I thought of sharing two of my photographs, which I treat as very special. Both the photographs were a result of an extremely fast reflex action, to capture the rarest of rare frame, which was probably available for 1/10th of a second, just enough time to press the shutter once ! Had I delayed even for a millisecond, the precious moment would have been lost in oblivion and the picture wouldn’t have been the same.

These two pictures make me feel like Clint Eastwood. If he was fast with guns, and I with my camera !

Frozen Speed

A car passing on the opposite direction in high speed, a plane taking off over a goods vehicle on the service lane , near Bangalore Airport.

Birds of same feather

Pigeons disrupted by the sound of a phatphati starting outside Jaisalmer Fort, Rajasthan.

Both the pictures were taken with Nikon Coolpix 7.1 MP.

Am I Covered at the Tailgate?

Football season means many things…but one of the first things that comes to mind in TAILGATING! Fans across the country will be filling stadium parking lots with grills, ready for hamburgers and ribs. Crowding around the truck and chowing down on hot wings is an American tradition that marks the beginning of Fall almost as much as the first red leaf.

If you’re heading out to the big game for a tailgating party, the amount of car insurance you have is probably the last thing on your mind. But you should know that even with the car in park, things can still happen to your car.

Let’s say you’re parked, heating up the grill, and another football fan’s rolling grill rams into the side of your truck. Take away the fact that he’s rooting for the other team, now you’ve got a huge dent on the side of your truck. If you have a basic car insurance policy it usually includes collision coverage, which covers you from collisions with other cars, objects and in some cases even potholes.

Having a beer at the game is common for many football fans. Unfortunately, some people don’t realize when they’ve had too much and attempt to drive home while they are drunk. If a drunk driver hits your car in the parking lot, your collision auto insurance will cover the damage.

If you’re planning a tailgate party this football season, check with the Protection Connection (www.ProtectionConnectionInsurance.com) and make sure you have enough collision coverage–we all know how rowdy football fans can get. The car features the intersection of enviromental sustainability and performance, two brand values of great importance for the German automakers. The car features dual electric motors on each axle together with a 3-cylinder turbodiesel engine. Performance-wise, the car can hit 155 mph with a 0-62 mph time of 4.8 seconds. On the flipside, with the help of a coefficient drag of 0.22, the car gets a staggering 3.76 liters/100 kilometers or 62.6 mpg.

Do I even have to mention this joint is sick?

No title

This post has no title. Why? Because I still do not have a car title.

You may remember my fiasco from last year. Well part of the red tape I spoke of was  trying to get a North Carolina title transferred to a KS title and somehow the KS DMV lost my North Carolina title. I discovered this yesterday when I went to the DMV to get a copy of my title so I could take it over to Missouri to register my car.

I did try to stay calm and collected because I had learned my lesson before. But the following slipped out of my mouth:

“You may think I’m a crazy woman. And I am a crazy woman. But it’s really only because the DMV turns me into a crazy woman.”

They are investigating it today.

Which means I’m only slightly stressed out.

In the meanwhile, I recieved the agenda for Blogher Food in San Fransisco next weekend and I’m beyond excited.

The problem is, I don’t have enough time to read all these great food bloggers who will be speaking.

I would read some tonight, but I’m going to be too busy trying to cook this recipe tonight for Fire & Wine night with Roomie and DD Girl, using the fiance’s George Foreman grill.

Ha! Won’t that be a trip.

The Volkswagen Golf R with improved fuel efficiency

Volkswagen Golf R

The new Volkswagen Golf that launched at Frankfurt Motor Show yesterday appears to beat the Ford Focus RS with its smaller engine reduced weight and improved fuel efficiency.

VW has slotted a 2-litre turbocharged engine developing 265bhp into the R – 35bhp less than the Ford Focus RS. It will outgun the fast Ford initially but the electronically-limited top speed of 155mph means the RS has 8mph on its German rival.

The Golf R is all-wheel drive and with a manual ‘box still accelerates to 62mph in an impressive 5.7 seconds. With a combined fuel economy of 33.2mpg, it’s 21 per cent more efficient than the R32.

The Golf is considered to be very conservative. It has always been in demand since its launch and so is the demand higher for any used Volkswagen Golf car. These cars are very sturdy and reliable. Now with improved fuel efficiency, it is the bessstest of best!

For more information on used Volkswagen cars read the Volkswagen cars hub on Auto Trader UK. You might like to review the Focus RS in complete detail on the used Ford cars hub.

Bashing the boondocks

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with offroad vehicles.

Mud plugging monsters such as the Unimog, the Viking and anything by Oshkosh are cool because they’re so brutal and single minded, but the more roadgoing variety seem to be conspicuously out of place – more so as they adopt a widening range of shiny trinkets. There’s one vehicle that until recently seemed to buck this trend, and that’s the humble Land Rover Defender. It may be ugly and extremely spartan inside but it has character and grit and that’s something I always appreciate.

As as result I was extremely happy to be given the chance to take one of these beasties off road at All Terrain Services‘ training centre in Rutland. This is a custom made facility sharing land with a golf club in this tiny county to the east of Leicestershire, catering for fun stuff as well as more serious driver training. Even the approach along a very broken driveway suggests that one is not in for a gentle ride – something the assorted golfists would doubtless find amusing, although their choice of apparel always led me to question their sense of humour anyway, but I digress.

The unmistakeable sound of a torquey diesel mated to a stone age powertrain heralds the arrival of our extremely genial trainer Gilly, piloting a white Defender 110 – the stalwart of the off road scene, and the prime choice for anyone who needs to lug sheep up 45 degree hills. Jumping in reveals that this one has leather seats – oh, such excess – but in all other respects is a fine example of the solid, trusty, rough-as-a-badger’s-bum Landie we’ve come to know and love. A quick trundle up the access path and we’re stationary in a field facing a wide array of slightly worrying hills, banks and bombholes. Gilly runs through the function of the low/high range shifter and with its all conquering diff lock position, explains a little about how the power transfer works, drops it into low range and then sets off towards the nearest bank.. and straight up it at a troubling angle. As the axles twist, the wheels spin in mid-air, and we go precisely nowhere Gilly suggests that we ty the diff lock. A quick tap sideways on the magical shift lever results in a solid THUNK from somewhere amidships, and all of a sudden we’re doing a creditable impression of a mountain goat, up and over the edge. With this setting engaged the power is divided 50/50 between the front and rear axles, so you’ll always have at least one wheel powered on each.

The engine is running at relatively high revs even though we’re only trundling at a snails pace – such is the wonder of low range – so Gilly backs off, hauls the wheel around and trundles towards what can only be described as the edge of the world. Where one would expect to see a slow roll-off into a dip there is precisely nothing. I feel it impolite to point this out, so just double check my seatbelt and try to think of some good last words. Gilly suddenly remembers to ask if she’s mentioned ‘thumbs up’, and holds both of hers aloft to reveal that one is at a noticeably different angle to the other. This, she says, is  a warning to keep them outside of the steering wheel in case the vehicle hits an obstruction and the wheel is wrenched from your grip. Ah.

Fortunately (or not, as the case may turn out to be) there’s little time to reflect on this as we’re now about to plunge into oblivion. Only it doesn’t quite work out like that. Gilly has her feet off the pedals and our Landie is simply crawling forwards over the edge with the speed and force of continental drift. As the wheels hook over, the beast just keeps rolling using its own engine braking to take us safely down to the bottom. With little time to consider this, Gilly builds the revs back up and we begin scramble up the other side of the hole in which we’ve found ourselves.. which is at least the equal of the slope we’ve just tackled. It’s as if the world has suddenly rotated around to leave us on the flat. This is a serious piece of kit and shows absolute no sign of being flustered or stressed – I doubt I could even climb up this slope. Gilly mentions that a colleague likes the maxim ‘if you can’t walk it, don’t drive it’ but she gleefully reveals that she doesn’t agree, and suddenly jams on the brakes.

We’re now stopped halfway up a hill and the engine has stalled. Believe me, it took some doing as well – torque is not in short supply here. Gilly wanted to demonstrate how to get out of a hill stall while we had the chance; she stomps on the footbrake (’the handbrake won’t hold two tons on just the back wheels, so we don’t trust it’), engages reverse, releases the clutch and brake so we’re held stationary in gear and then fires up the ignition. With no fuss whatsoever we’re now gently bimbling backwards at the same rate at which we climbed. Gilly waits until we’re partly up the other slope to get the weight behind the direction of travel, grabs first and then guns it up the hill again and into bright sunlight.

By now I’m absolutely sold on this thing. It may be agricultural and have fewer home comforts than Guantanamo Bay, but the way it makes absolute mincemeat of amazing terrain without so much as a raised eyebrow simply beggars belief. I want a go.

The driving position is surprisingly comfortable, with a great view of that bluff bonnet festooned with stamped out kickplates. It’s a bit of a stretch to the gearstick, and the feel of the shift has more in common with a broomstick, but no matter. Brake clutch, low range, first, ignition, handbrake off, find the biting point and slowly release the brake – the torque in this lower range sets us off nice and smoothly without even needing any gas. Gilly starts to call out directions using the various markers strung around the course as guides, and we’re ducking and diving, scrambling up mind boggling inclines, skirting banks at angles that suggest we’re about to fall over sideways and generally thumbing our noses at physics. We also get to try a few little set pieces, such as a precise scramble across a pair of log rails designed to mimic a makeshift canyon crossing and a trek along a gully cut with alternating left and right potholes designed to twist the axles in opposite directions. Once the diff lock is engaged, we might as well be pulling into the driveway after a gentle cruise home – our trusty steed simply plods along oblivious to the chaos below its wheels.

All too soon, the session is over. I clamber down out of the 110, take a good step back and feel I’m seeing it with a new pair of eyes. This is truly the king of off roaders – a noble, honest servant with a placid demeanor, yet fire in its belly and balls of steel. It’s a truly magnificent creature and I now fully understand why you’d want to own one despite its apparent shortcomings.

The simple truth is that those shortcomings are only an issue if you try to make it do something it simply wasn’t designed to do. This is not a shopping car, it wasn’t built to take the kids to school, and it won’t enjoy a 300 mile motorway trek on the way to your holiday home. You’d be absolutely barking to have one of these as your daily driver because the harshness will drive you spare. However, if you find yourself stuck out in inhospitable terrain and you can request one vehicle to trek out and carry you back to safety, you’d be mad to hope for anything else. The humble Land Rover isn’t just a vehicle – it’s a calling, capable of affirming your life and then saving it ten minutes later when you’ve run out of ideas.

Oh, and I also understand now why Landie fanciers poke such scorn at soft roaders. To paraphrase the Cat from Red Dwarf – ‘you either got it, or you don’t.. and you guys.. you ain’t even close’
